bit of a hassle but i open all my outlook emails through Mail2web, means you can loom at the title and sender without opening and then delete it

Before switching to Thunderbird, I used
MailWasher with quite good results. I'm not sure on how it performs now though.

there's a few proxy programs you can set up on
this site that should do a decent enough job. they can add a bit of text to the subject of anything flagged as spam, then you just filter those with the flag out.

well i have used mozilla/firefox for ages but never looked at thunderbird.
installed it a few days ago and am more than happy with the results.
