thought it would be really easy as it was the first line of a song that reached the top 10 and was recently covered.

It's been a long time since I listened to GnR, but I'm fairly sure it's 'You could be mine'. Going to dig up those old tapes again I think, thanks Ray

My official entry:
Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm
And here's a bonus lyric (from another song, obviously) because we have reached 10 pages of lyrics guessing!
A bottle of whiskey at his feet
and a barrel of porter at his head

I know the second one is an Irish Folk song or similar, my nanna sings it (no she's not Irish - just a big drinker
). But I can't remember the chorus which is probably also the name of the song?

You are right Derv - it's Finnegan's Wake, performed by many artists - but my favourite is the punk rock version by Dropkick Murphys
.
I don't think the first quote is very obscure, although some knowledge of 70s rock bands is required.

The fact its a 70's rock band automatically makes it obscure doesnt it? We should add some rules like - had to be in the top ten / number 1 / made by someone who had more than one hit and doesnt now live in a cave / not the hidden album track off the bands follow up album that only sold 3 copies.

OK then, it was 'Have you ever seen the rain?' - go ahead Evz!
I'll try and be less obscure next time
, although not being into the modern Top 30 music makes that slightly difficult. I have no clue what kids listen to these days
